How to Back Up and Restore Your Files in Windows

If you’re in a pinch, Windows File History is your savior. When Windows 10 is installed on your PC, it’ll automatically back up files and folders.

This can be useful if you have an older PC that you don’t think will keep working without a server or two.There are several things to remember when backing up files and folders. You must first choose which folders to back up using File History.

Then, you must select which files to backup using File History.

Setting up File History

File History is not as simple as it sounds. It requires a few clicks away from the taskbar and some manual work if you are using Windows 10, Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.Windows File History is a feature that allows you to automatically back up important files and documents stored in your system folder.

It’s not just one file that you can schedule to be backed up, but all of your files will be backed up by default, including your documents, pictures, videos and music tracks.To create a new backup, right-click on the ‘File History’ icon in the system tray and select ‘Back Up Now’.

You can use the same trick to restore any file or folder that has already been backed up which can be done by right-clicking on the File History icon in the system tray and selecting ‘Restore’ from the context menu that pops up .Both options come with a warning before you click ‘Yes’.

They warn you that if you don’t take any action within 30 minutes after their windows update (which could take several hours for some users), all your previous versions of Windows files will be deleted forever!

But just click ‘Yes’ if you want to restore them in case something happens to your PC (like it crashes) and you don’t know how long it will take for Windows to do its thing.

Using File History

You can use the File History feature to back up important files and documents to an external location. It’s a great way to improve your computer’s performance, especially if you have a lot of files or documents on your computer (or even a family member has multiple computers).

You can automatically back up important files and documents using Windows File History.

1. Right-click the desktop or one of your desktop shortcut icons and then click Properties.

2. There are several different ways to open File History in Windows 10/11:

b) If you have System Restore enabled, right-click any file or folder and click Properties. Select “Advanced” from the menu that appears at the bottom of the dialog box. Click “Restore from backup” from the menu that appears at the top of the dialog box and choose an option from the drop-down list that appears onscreen close to it:

where you want to save your file(s), how many days back you want it saved, or how much space you want to use for recovery (you can also select “All free space” if you don’t know how much space is available). The default option is 1 day — meaning all of your files are saved in a single file named “FileHistoryBackup”.

You can also change this default option by clicking and dragging your mouse over each file or folder that you want to save and then holding down Shift while clicking each one again until they’re all selected. When all of them are selected, right-click each one again, click Properties, and change each setting as described below

b) If you don’t have System Restore enabled in Windows 10/11, right-click any file or folder and click Properties. Select “Advanced” from the menu that appears at the bottom of the dialog box above Browse my computer for items in Files & Folders on Computer . Click Advanced Options under General tab on dropdown menu at left side of dialog box—and then click Back Up Now . You’ll be asked for a place where this backup (and any others) should be stored—a hard drive partitioned drive or another location (e.g., USB flash drive). Because File History backs up only specific folders and files, I suggest putting it on a partitioned drive where it won’t affect other partitions (e.g., FAT32), but if this isn’t possible, try backing up only one folder at a time instead of multiple folders simultaneously
